Fig. 6 (Click to Enlarge)

Figs. 6. Custom flatware made for J. P. Morgan’s yacht, likely the CORSAIR III.  Top: all-silver butter spreader with openwork handle spelling out “CORSAIR,” stamped on blade front with “JPM” monogram.  No maker’s mark, but attributed to Marcus & Co. of New York.  Length 5 3/4 inches.  Bottom left: bouillon spoon with tip formed as openwork monogram “JPM”; marked “MARCUS & CO.”  Bottom center: ramekin (or terrapin?) fork with tip formed as openwork monogram “JMP” and handle with applied “CORSAIR.”  Bottom right: teaspoon with handle cast as back-to-back dolphins ending in a “JPM” monogram.  Markings and lengths of fork and teaspoon not available; attributed to Howard & Company of New York.  The crescent and star forming the functional end of the fork and the tip of the teaspoon were the emblems on the signal flag of Morgan’s yacht.  Photo courtesy of Sotheby’s, New York.
