Since we are in fact only a few(!) weeks from Christmas, holiday-themed patterns are a great choice for home décor and gifts. Christmas Tree by Spode is part of this group, and happens to be one of the world’s most recognizable and sought after holiday patterns. Featuring distinctive green trim and THE classic decorated Christmas tree center, there is only one Spode Christmas Tree! The Christmas Tree pattern was designed in 1938 by Harold Holdway for Spode's North American counterpart Copeland and Thompson, Inc. Having never seen an actual Christmas tree, Mr. Holdway had to rely on his innate creative abilities. His original sketch called for the Christmas presents to hang on the tree's limbs, like ornaments. Naturally, he was told the presents are placed UNDER the tree, and he revised his sketch to reflect the change. He did manage to leave a unique touch however. Mr. Holdway did not realize that most Americans used either angels or stars as tree toppers. He placed atop his tree design a figure of Santa Claus. The unique design created some concern among Mr. Holdway’s North American colleagues, but the pattern was commissioned anyway. To date, it has been one of the most successful Christmas patterns in dinnerware history. Christmas Tree is made of strong, premium quality earthenware called "Imperialware". It is exceptionally durable and beautifully decorative. The "easy care" characteristics of Imperialware make Spode's Christmas Tree ideal for entertaining during the busy holiday season.
