Replacements, Ltd. founder reveals personal story to encourage men to take control of their health as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
GREENSBORO, N.C., September 25, 2008 – Replacements, Ltd. founder Bob Page views his associates as family, which is why he’s worked to establish on-site health care screenings for numerous conditions, including prostate cancer. He’s proud of the fact that over the past four years, these tests helped four men detect this form of cancer early enough for successful treatment. But earlier this year, the tables turned when Page himself received a suspicious result. Further examination confirmed Page had developed prostate cancer.
“The first 24 hours after I found out were so depressing,” says Page. “But then I got on the internet and started doing my own research. The more I read, I started understanding that this isn’t the end of my life and the diagnosis did not have to change the quality of my life. I realized it’s up to me to choose the best treatment option and no one could make that decision for me.”
Page took matters in his own hands, reading everything he could find about the disease and various treatments. After weeks of research, he decided on HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound), a non-invasive, radiation free therapy that uses precisely focused ultrasound waves to heat and destroy pathogenic tissue. HIFU is routinely performed in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, Canada, the Caribbean and other countries, but at this time deemed experimental in the United States by the FDA pending current ongoing clinical trials. Two months ago, Page ventured outside the country for treatment. His latest blood test revealed that his PSA is now .1, well within range of the normal PSA level of 0 to 4.0.
“The main reason I’m speaking out now is to encourage other men to get tested and to encourage them to do their own research to determine the best treatment options. It really is up to each of us to be proactive and be our own healthcare advocates, rather than let someone else make treatment decisions for us that may have a devastating impact on our lives.”
Once again this September, Replacements will offer PSA screenings to the company’s male associates as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Last year 42 employees took part in this wellness initiative, while the company expects even more to participate this month. In related news, Replacements will offer free mammograms for the company’s female associates in October as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
