Replacements, Ltd. Celebrates Bring Your Pet to Work Day Following Groundbreaking Research Project
GREENSBORO, N.C., June 15, 2012 – Bringing your pet to work takes on deeper meaning following the release of groundbreaking research conducted at Replacements, Ltd. The Greensboro retailer will welcome all pets at the company’s annual
Bring Your Pet to Work Day scheduled for Friday, June 22, 2012. This event ties into activities planned nationally as part of Pet Sitters International’s
Take Your Dog to Work Day.
A Virginia Commonwealth University study found the presence of pets in the workplace reduces stress and increases job satisfaction. Researchers spent a week at the company monitoring stress levels among three test groups: those who brought dogs to work, those who have dogs but did not bring them to work, and those who do not own pets.
“What surprised us most is the fact stress actually decreased throughout the day among those participants who bring their dogs to work, while stress levels significantly increased for those who leave their dogs at home or don’t own pets,” says principal researcher Randolph T. Barker, Ph.D., professor of management at VCU’s School of Business. “We also found it very interesting that about half of those who bring their dogs to work said their productivity increased with their dog present. Additional findings indicate having pets in the workplace also increases cooperation among coworkers.”
Results were published in the
International Journal of Workplace Health Management in March. This research marks the first quantitative study conducted in the workplace on the psychological and physiological impact of animals. Researchers measured hormone stress levels and conducted surveys to support their results. Replacements implemented the company’s pet friendly polices more than 17 years ago.
“The study results support what we’ve noticed here at Replacements for many years,” says Public Relations Manager Lisa Conklin. “We’ve found having pets in the workplace relieves stress on a number of levels. Pet owners are relieved they don’t have to worry about leaving their pets at home alone and can better concentrate on their daily tasks, while it allows those who can’t bring their pets or for some reason can’t own them to interact with animals. We’ve seen many instances where employees actually got to know each other better through their pets. I do think it means a great deal to our staff; some employees say it is one of the best benefits we offer here at Replacements.”
Replacements generally sees 20-30 pets coming to work on an average day, but expects additional attendance for
Bring Your Pet to Work Day events. For more information, contact Lisa Conklin at (336) 697-3000, ext. 2552 ((336) 209-0951 mobile) or
