Replacements, Ltd. Recognized as National Leader in LGBT Equality
Only North Carolina-based company to receive perfect score 12 consecutive years
GREENSBORO, N.C., December 9, 2013 – The Human Rights Campaign Foundation this morning recognized Replacements, Ltd. as one of the top U.S. companies leading the charge for workplace protection and equality. This recognition comes during a historic year of progress for the equal rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans.
For the twelfth consecutive year, Replacements received a perfect score on the HRC’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI). The annual report rates how major American companies treat LGBT employees, consumers and investors. Replacements is one of nine companies in the nation to achieve a 100 percent rating since the index began in 2002, and the only North Carolina-based company to achieve a perfect score all twelve years.
Replacements joined other major businesses across the country this year in urging the Supreme Court to strike down the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8. The Greensboro retailer also took an active role in a public coalition urging Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a proposed federal law that would provide consistent nationwide legal protections from workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The State of North Carolina does not offer these protections.
“We’ve made major strides forward this past year in the fight for LGBT equality, and we certainly can’t slow down now,” says Replacements’ Founder and CEO Bob Page. “I’m so pleased to see President Obama speaking out in support of passing ENDA. With the bill already approved by the Senate, I urge House lawmakers to bring this long overdue protection to a vote. American businesses have come so far in recognizing that employees should be judged on their qualifications and work performance alone, not on their sexual orientation, gender identity or other factors that don’t have anything to do with work. It’s time our country’s leaders get on the same page and expand employment rights and protections.”
“Corporate America has long recognized the imperative of LGBT inclusion by implementing their own LGBT-friendly policies ahead of lawmakers,” says HRC Workplace Equality Program Director Deena Fidas. “We are at the front of a new era in which major businesses are not only meeting ever-higher new bars for workplace fairness, they are exceeding them by becoming social and public policy change agents in the process. They recognize equality is not just the right thing to do, it is sound business practice.”
The HRC Foundation is the educational arm of the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization. The CEI has become the gold standard for corporate policies and practices related to LGBT employees and their families; a record 303 major U.S. businesses earned a perfect score this year.
