Azalea by Noritake
Noritake was founded in Japan in 1904 as the Nippon Toki Nabushiki Kaisha, Ltd. company by the Morimura brothers. With Japan having been closed to trade with other nations for hundreds of years, the dawn of the 20th century brought new life to the island nation. Trade with other countries was now possible, and opportunities were endless. The Morimura brothers wanted to bring traditional Japanese art and craftsmanship to the West, and fine tableware and ceramics would become a popular staple for the fledgling company. Over the course of many decades Noritake tableware developed a reputation for very high quality and exquisite beauty. Today, Noritake is revered around the world as a leading producer of beautiful dinnerware.
Azalea, one of Noritake's most beautiful and sought after patterns, is hand-painted and produced to the highest quality standards. The soft hues of pinks, grays, and greens lend a strong botanic feel while the understated white background and gold trim add sleek sophistication. The pattern has a history of its own and made Noritake a household name in America.
Azalea's rise to fame in this country can be attributed to its success as a promotional item offered by a catalog company.
In the second decade of the 1900s, the Larkin Company offered odd pieces of
Azalea as 'premiums' for purchasing their soap products. The offerings in this pattern were a smashing success. Offering pieces of the pattern as purchase premiums made it affordable for households across the entire economic spectrum of America. By 1930, Larkin was offering over 56 distinctive pieces in the pattern. In 1941, war stopped all imports from Japan, and marked the end of the original
Azalea pattern. The "Azalea" name enjoyed many different embodiments in years to come, but none could match the beauty and mastery of the original version. Check below for a great selection of original Noritake
Azalea pieces at great prices!
