Caithness Glass Company was formed in 1961 in Wick, a fishing town on the east coast of the Scottish Highlands. From its inception, Caithness set out to produce art-quality glass, taking inspiration from the colors, textures, and features of the wild and beautiful landscape in the north of Scotland. The company’s work soon became fashionable in homes throughout Europe and the United States. In 1968 Caithness hired Scotsman Colin Terris to head up a new engraving studio for the company. Terris, now acknowledged internationally as the “father of modern paperweight design,” would serve as head designer for Caithness for 33 years. His work modernized the technique of “millefiori” glass-making, a technique first developed by the Romans in the first century BC. Because of the remarkable design and high quality of Caithness pieces, the Queen Mother of the United Kingdom granted the company a Royal Warrant – an honor that can only be bestowed by a member of the royal family. Caithness continues to produce some of the most beautiful art glass in the world, featuring intense, vibrant colors.
