Operation Overlord was the code name for the sea-based landing orchestrated by the Allied Forces to gain a foothold in Nazi-occupied northwest Europe during WWII. The operation began on June 6, 1944 (what is generally referred to as “D-Day”) and continued until Allied forces crossed the Seine river on August, 19, 1944. In addition to being the largest amphibious assault in history, battle plans included landings by airborne forces, air attacks, and naval bombardment. Due to the bravery and skill of Allied forces, Operation Overlord was a decisive victory – the campaign led to the loss of the German position in most of France, and the establishment of a new major new Allied front in Europe.
Spode is one of the most popular lines we carry, and for good reason. Founder Josiah Spode opened the doors of his porcelain factory in 1780. Under his careful guidance, the Spode factory introduced two important breakthroughs in the development of English ceramics. The first was a formula for bone china that is still used today. Spode was the first English china manufacturer to achieve vitrification of fired china using bone ash and higher firing temperatures, resulting in non-porous, more beautiful, and longer-lasting china. The company’s second important achievement was perfecting the “underglaze” decorating process – also in use today. Spode developed ways of applying intricate designs to china that would last for years without chipping, scratching, or fading.
