The first company in the world to produce a series of annual plates for Mother's Day, Denmark’s Bing & Grondahl is the second oldest and second largest porcelain-producing factory in the country, rivaling its predecessor, Royal Copenhagen. Formed in Copenhagen in 1853 by Frederik Vilhelm Grondahl, with financing from M.H. and J.H. Bing, Bing & Grondahl perfected the “underglaze” method of firing in 1889, a technique now imitated by many companies to produce sharp, crisp images that do not bleed when fired. Each plate is hand painted in cobalt blue on white clay biscuit. Like the company’s other high-quality porcelain productions, the “Mother’s Day Plate” is a gift that will be enjoyed for years to come.
