Department 56’s origins date back to 1976 and Bachman’s, a leading retail florist in Minneapolis. A large and successful enterprise, Bachman’s used an extensive numbering system for its different departments. Its wholesale gift imports division was “Department 56.” That year, Bachman’s introduced 6 lighted ceramic cottages in what became known as the “Original Snow Village.” Serious collectors today might pay more than $1,000.00 for one of the original cottages. Three years later, the original 6 designs were retired, and 12 new designs were introduced, along with the first accessory pieces. In 1998, Department 56 responded to the growing interest in Halloween celebrations with the “Snow Village Halloween” series. Collectors’ fascination continues to grow - Department 56 collector clubs are located from Hawaii to Alaska, from California to Maryland!
