According to lore, the pagan Druids in Britain used the plant mistletoe to celebrate the coming of winter. An evergreen that grows high in the tops of its host trees, mistletoe was gathered by the Druids to decorate their homes. They believed the plant had special healing and restorative powers for an array of ailments. In Scandinavia, pagans also saw mistletoe as a restorative plant thought to bring peace and harmony to a household. Mistletoe was associated with the Norse goddess, Frigga, said to be the wife of the god, Odin, and symbol of love and maternity. The custom of kissing under the mistletoe probably first derived from the plant's pagan association with Frigga. About the fourth century, however, the Christian church banned the use of mistletoe in Christmas celebrations because of its pagan origins. Church fathers suggested the use of holly as an alternative for Christmas greenery. And so holly made its way into our traditional Christmas decorations.
