Samuel Kirk, a Philadelphia-trained silversmith, revived an ancient form of silver design (dating back to the bronze age) known as "repousse", in which pattern design was added by applying force to the inner wall of silver pieces and "popping out" the desired design. Stieff used the repousee technique to create one of the most visually interesting sterling patterns ever produced, and called it, naturally,
