Naif Christmas features a variety of folk art holiday scenes, based on simple but striking art produced by the world renowned folk artist, Gerard LaPlau. LaPlau belongs to the French school of naive artists who were heavily influenced by artists such as Henri Rousseau (in 1894 his “War” won him his first recognition by the avant-garde) and Camille Bombois (especially noted for naif paintings of circus scenes.) Naive art is known for a simple style that uses unbound perspective, bright colors, and in many cases very literal depiction of imaginary scenes. The term usually refers to works produced by artists (also called naifs) who had no formal training, though many highly-trained artists have deliberately affected a naive style.
