American-Clear by Fostoria
|
This month we feature one of our most popular crystal patterns,
American-Clear by
Fostoria. Fostoria’s
American-Clear (also known as
Early American) was designed by Phillip Ebeling in 1915. The design was immediately patented and the pattern quickly became one of Fostoria’s best selling patterns. Each piece in this heavy, pressed-glass line features a prismatic cube design that rests atop a multi-faceted, smooth stem and hexagonal base. At the time the pattern was introduced in 1915, the Fostoria Glass Company designers wrote the following description - “It is impossible to produce by illustration the real appearance of this design, which is prismatic in effect; by either artificial or sun light it produces all the ‘prismatic’ fire to a greater extent than any table glassware pattern that we have ever produced.” What a great description, but they had to write an attention-grabbing one since there were not a lot of photo-filled product catalogs in 1915! If you set your table with this pattern, you’ll see what the writers meant by “prismatic fire”, these pieces are gorgeous.
American-Clear was Fostoria’s bestselling pattern for 67 years and the design itself has become a part of American history. The
American-Clear pattern includes more than 400 documented piece types, with many other rare concept pieces in circulation, but which have not been catalogued. This month, we highlight many of the very rare and collectible pieces we offer for sale in this amazing glass pattern.
