When we hear the name “Gorham,” most of us associate it with sterling silver. Jabez Gorham founded Gorham Silver in 1831 in a shop on Steeple Street in Providence, RI. Born into a family of eight, Jabez was apprenticed to New England silver patriarch Nehemiah Dodge at a very early age. Dodge is recognized as one of the founders of the silver and jewelry crafts industry in 18th century New England. After his seven-year apprenticeship with Dodge, Gorham formed his own business and quickly established a name for himself, creating distinctive hand-crafted silver pieces.

The company’s reputation for excellence endures today. By 1875 Gorham Silver had more than 400 employees, and in 1890 the company moved to a 30-acre campus in Providence. Renowned architect Stanford White designed a spectacular office building for Gorham Silver in 1905 and the company opened a store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Gorham has continued to prosper, expanding into other dinnerware product categories, manufacturing delicate yet versatile china and high-quality crystal, along with its legendary silver.
