This month we feature a lovable Terrier mix “Duchess”, and her owner Steve Hyatt. Steve is a member of our Curating/Research Team, and he rescued Duchess from a local animal shelter in 1999, when she was 3 years old. Duchess was a stray dog, and had been at the shelter for over a month. Steve said he could not resist Duchess after seeing her sweet face.
Duchess has chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker colors and for that reason the people at the shelter had named her “S’more.” When Steve brought Duchess home, he tried naming her several different times, but with no response. One day, while watching television, a man walked into a room and said “Hello, Duchess.” Duchess’ ears perked up and she came to sit beside Steve. After that, Steve started calling her Duchess!
Since the day Duchess was adopted, she has accompanied Steve to work. Starting her first day here, Duchess began making friends with other pets, including
Weenie, one of our previously featured pets. Coincidentally, Weenie was adopted the same week that Duchess was. Duchess loves small dogs of all types, including two that are near her each day at work, Max and Koko. One of Duchess’ favorite activities is begging for and receiving treats from various human friends at Replacements.
Steve is single and has two cats as well. He says that he loves the Replacements, Ltd. pet friendly policy, remarking “Having Duchess at work is very healthy for her because it gives her purpose and keeps her active.” Steve said that he cannot imagine life without Duchess and has said that there is no better place to find a new friend than at an animal shelter.
