Featured Pet (and Pet Owner!)
This month we feature a gorgeous female Husky named “Aspen.” This beautiful dog belongs to Laurie Oliver who has been with Replacements, Ltd. since 1993. Currently, Laurie works as a member of our Purchasing staff.
The story of how Aspen came to be Laurie’s pet is quite interesting. Laurie and her boyfriend, Dean, are quite adventurous. They love being outdoors, mountain climbing, hiking, and four wheeling. In August of 2006, Laurie and Dean took a trip to the Nantahala National Forest. This beautiful nature preserve is located in the western most portion of North Carolina. “Nantahala” is Cherokee for “noonday sun.” The high peaks of the mountains, low depths of the river and valleys, means that some parts of the forest floor are illuminated only when the sun is highest in the sky. While Laurie and Dean were riding, they came across a beautiful Husky who was running free on the mountain trails. Laurie said it was one of the sweetest dogs she had ever met. Aspen turned out to be very friendly and seemed to follow Laurie wherever she went.
As luck would have it, Aspen belonged to the relative of one of Laurie’s friends. When it was time for Laurie and Dean to head home, they jokingly mentioned that if Aspen ever needed a place to stay, they would be happy to oblige. About six weeks later, Aspen did need a home and Laurie and Dean made the trek back through North Carolina’s rich mountains to pick up Aspen.
After they arrived home, Laurie learned that Aspen was indeed an outdoor dog. She had to be house broken and taught that television remotes are not treats. Aspen proved to be incredibly smart and learned quickly. Laurie now says she is the best “indoor/outdoor dog” that anyone could ever want.
When asked what she liked most about the Replacements Ltd. pet-friendly policy, Laurie had this to say, “I love our pet-friendly policy. Being able to bring our pets to work is a wonderful way to let them know that we love them. Also, Aspen really likes visiting all of her friends in the Purchasing Department.”
