Featured Pet (and Pet Owner!)
This month we feature a beautiful female rescue poodle for our
Featured Pet (and Pet Owner) story. “CoCo” is owned by Nelson Poindexter, who has been with Replacements Ltd. since 1986 and is currently a member of our Curating team. CoCo’s rescue, like so many other pet rescues at Replacements, Ltd., is very touching.
At the end of August of 2004 Nelson’s partner, Lanning, got a call from his mother. She had found a little abandoned poodle in a restaurant parking lot. She asked if Nelson and Lanning could take care of it until a home could be found for it. Nelson and Lanning agreed even though they already had two poodles, Mady and Muffin. Nelson was also a little skeptical as to whether or not Mady and Muffin would be willing to accept a new member into the family.
When Nelson first met CoCo, she had no hair on her back legs, she was covered in fleas, and was scared to death! She walked in small circles, was scared to walk in grass, and was unable to climb stairs. The vet said she was approximately 6 years old at the time and was probably kept in a cage her whole life. It was believed that she was bred repeatedly.
CoCo immediately took up with Mady and Muffin but Nelson and Lanning were unsure of whether or not they could take on the responsibility of a third dog. Several people visited Nelson and Lanning and considered adopting little CoCo, but each time she would hide behind the furniture and bark. It was apparent that she was very frightened and Nelson and Lanning decided it would be difficult to find the right owner for her. They tried once more when Nelson visited friends in Wilmington, NC for Thanksgiving of 2004. He and Lanning took CoCo to see if she would be a good fit in Wilmington. When it was time to leave, Nelson realized he couldn’t leave CoCo. Nelson, Lanning, and CoCo had grown too close. As if to say, “I’ve found my home,” CoCo crawled into Nelson’s bed one night while he was asleep. Nelson woke to find CoCo on his pillow that morning. Nelson says CoCo is now the queen of the house and follows him and Lanning everywhere. Today, CoCo has stopped nervously walking in circles and even likes to jump on pool floats, if Nelson or Lanning are on it.
When asked what he liked most about the Replacements Ltd. pet-friendly policy, Nelson had this to say, “I am so grateful that I am able to enjoy CoCo’s companionship while I am at work. Being able to bring our pets to work is a wonderful way to allow them to get some exercise and to socialize them. I believe our pet policy is priceless.”
