Featured Pet (and Pet Owner!)
This month we feature “Elizabeth Swan,” a.k.a. “Liz,” an 8-month-old cairn terrier. She is the proud “owner” of human Sandie Dennis, Supervisor, Mail Processing, who has been with Replacements, Ltd. since 1996.
In July 2007 Sandie had to have her 14-year-old miniature poodle, “Max,” put to sleep due to his age and declining health. Max had been Sandie’s soul mate his entire life. The pain of his loss was enormous. Rather than continue to mourn his death, however, Sandie determined it was time to see if there might be a suitable puppy that would be able to fill Max’s giant paw prints.
Sandie began her search in February 2008 by looking into breed characteristics. She didn’t want another poodle for fear she would compare the puppy to Max. So she detailed her requirements in internet search criteria: “little to no shedding, smaller rather than larger, but not tiny, intelligent, good with children, loyal, and affectionate.” The search result was “cairn terrier” (like “Toto” in the 1939 Judy Garland movie, “The Wizard of Oz”).
Like “Dorothy” in the movie, Sandie was off to see her wizard, finally finding a local breeder who had just one female cairn terrier puppy left. Sandie went that very afternoon to see her. It was love at first sight! Sandie is convinced that Max had a hand (paw) in directing her to Liz. Liz’s personality is similar to his, although Liz is a bit more gregarious than Max was. Sandie learned quickly that “intelligent” does not equate to “obedient,” however! Cairn terriers are notorious for putting their noses to ground and running when turned loose, refusing to come when called until they, or their mistresses, reach the point of exhaustion! As a result, Liz is always on a leash when she’s not at home – even at work!
Liz accompanies Sandie to work every day and has her routine down pat. Since Sandie works a very early shift, Liz prefers to stay in the car and nap until 7:30 or 8:00am each morning. Then she comes in for breakfast and greets her coworkers before settling down to play with her rawhide toys or her best friend, coworker “Alex,” a female Jack Russell terrier. If Alex is at work, the two girls play tug of war and chase for 30 minutes before curling up for a nap!
Sandie believes the Replacements, Ltd. pet policy is one of the most valuable benefits the company offers employees. “Having a well behaved pet at work is better than having a massage for stress relief,” she says. “They become part of the Replacements, Ltd. family and develop friendships and relationships just like the humans do! Replacements, Ltd. is one of the most progressive companies in the area, if not the nation, with its pet-friendly policy, casual dress code, family-work time balance, and genuine concern for employees and the community. The recent decision to allow employees the option of a 4-day, 10-hour per day work week to help individuals save on gas expenses is a huge bonus! Replacements, Ltd. is a great place to work!”
