Featured Pet (and Pet Owner!)
On her wedding anniversary a little more than four years ago, Guyda Willmann, Business Analyst/Developer 3 with the Replacements, Ltd. Information Services Developers Group, received quite a surprise. Her husband Terry showed up at the door of their house with “Dutch,” a male German shepherd puppy.
“Happy anniversary!” Terry said, and quickly deposited Dutch in Guyda’s arms. The poor little guy was badly in need of a bath! The relatively short drive in his carrier from the breeder’s house to his new home had been stressful for the puppy, being taken away from his mom and eight siblings – and he was a mess, to say the least. While Terry went to draw a bath for Dutch, Guyda held the stinky pup in her arms and fell in love.
“I’d never had a pet before,” Guyda said, “unless you count the guppies I had in a fishbowl when I was young. But Dutch was so sweet, and he still is!”
It didn’t take Dutch long to make himself right at home. Now he likes to chase deer, squirrels, and rabbits in the yard. “Thank goodness he hasn’t caught anything yet!” Guyda said. “And he loves his games. He’ll bring an object, a toy, a stick, whatever he can find, and drop it on the ground. Then he’ll splay out his forelegs, daring you to grab the object. Of course, you can’t be quicker than he is, so he’ll snatch it and start running. He expects you to chase after him. If you don’t, he’ll turn round and start chasing after you, still carrying his prized object. He’s a character!”
Another amusing aspect of Dutch’s personality is his selection of accommodations. He’s one lucky dog in that he can choose from three different kennels! One is in the garage, one is in the finished basement, and one is in the yard. “When it’s time for us to turn in for the night,” Guyda said, “we’re never quite sure which kennel he’ll choose. We haven’t figured out his decision-making process!”
Dutch is intelligent and obedient, and enjoys learning new commands. But probably his favorite activity is riding in “his” truck. “When they’re riding in the truck together, I’m not quite sure who enjoys it more – my husband, Terry, or Dutch!” Guyda said. “Of course, we’re biased, but we think Dutch is the smartest and most beautiful German shepherd ever!” One look at the image of Guyda with handsome Dutch, and we think you’ll be inclined to agree.
“While Dutch doesn’t usually come to work with me,” Guyda said, “it’s nice to know that with the Replacements, Ltd. pet-friendly policy, he can. I think Replacements, Ltd. is an amazing place. So many china patterns, it’s unbelievable! I love it when I can help connect customers with just what they’ve been looking for!”
