When it comes to employment seniority for pets at Replacements, Ltd., Julie Schindler’s rescued mixed-breed “Weenie” is top dog. Julie and Weenie are members of our Internet Services team, and Weenie started coming to work here when she was just one year old – that was 11 years ago!
“Over the entire time, I think I left Weenie at home only 5 or 6 days. My veterinarian told me that bringing Weenie to work has been good for her in two ways,” Julie said. “Now that she’s older, she has problems with arthritis. If she were to stay home by herself, not getting any exercise, her joints would stiffen. At work I can take her for walks, and she has her routine of visiting her other pet friends, so she’s active.” There’s another benefit that’s even more important. Julie feels that bringing Weenie to work has extended her life span. “My vet says that it’s important for a dog to feel a sense of purpose and belonging,” Julie said. “Weenie feels that here. She remembers the work schedules of other employees in our department. And she’s always up and ready to greet them a few minutes before they report in.”
Now that Weenie is older, Julie has to be careful about her diet. “Everyone wants to give her treats, of course, as a way of showing her love,” Julie said. “But we’ve had to restrict what she gets to Cheerios, usually the low-fat, whole wheat ones, which are good for her! Everyone has been really good about it.” But Weenie does share a little secret with one of the employees in the department. “Weenie gets special treats from Alice Potter. The two of them think I don’t know,” Julie said with a smile. “But Alice gives her just a little, so it’s all right.”
Julie and her husband rescued Weenie at the Guilford County Animal Shelter when she was a puppy. “People should always remember the important service the shelters provide. And they should remember that their next best friend may be waiting there to be saved!”
Julie feels that Replacements, Ltd. has been an ideal place to work. “The employee benefits are wonderful,” she said. “But of all of them, the pet-friendly policy is the best. It’s helped extend Weenie’s life span, and it’s something that makes this company feel like family.”
