Replacements, Ltd. web developer Rob Vreeland sometimes takes advantage of our company policy allowing employees to work “remote” (usually from their home computers) to reduce fuel costs. Whenever Rob works at home in Chapel Hill, NC, he’s closely supervised by “Freya” and “Claudia,” two cats Rob and his wife, Kathy, rescued.
“My wife Kathy and I have never considered ourselves to be ‘cat people,’” Rob said. “In fact, we were thinking of getting a dog in the summer of 2009, when we found Freya as a small kitten living outside under our air conditioner. We brought her in ‘just for the night’ and decided to keep her.”
After a few months, the Vreelands decided Freya was wearing them out with her activities. “We thought she needed a playmate,” Rob said. “So we went to the Goathouse Refuge in Pittsboro, NC, to pick out another cat. When we got there, we saw Claudia busily chasing a spider all over the room, and immediately decided she would be a valuable addition to the household.”
Volunteers at the refuge told the Vreelands that they had been trying to find a home for Claudia for several months, but she kept sleeping through the adoption events. “We were fortunate to catch her when she was awake!” Rob said.
Rob doesn’t bring Freya and Claudia to work, because he feels the two felines might not get along with all the dogs at our offices. “The cats do, however, enjoy the Replacements remote work policy,” Rob said. “When I work at home, they like to help out by jumping on the computer, batting the monitor with their paws, and napping on the keyboard.”
When Freya and Claudia aren’t assisting Rob with his work on the Replacements, Ltd. web site, they maintain their own Facebook presence (with some help from their humans, Rob and Kathy!).
Rob has been working here since 2006. “I like being at Replacements, Ltd. because I get to work with a cutting-edge web site,” Rob said. “And I get to meet a wide variety of fascinating people and pets!”
