“Bear” is a three-year-old rottweiler/labrador mix who belongs to Brenda Kormanec, a silver inventory specialist at Replacements, Ltd, and her husband. After losing their beloved dog, “Rufus,” two years ago, Brenda and her husband decided it was time for another “fur-ever” friend. “We found Bear at the Watauga Humane Society, so we traveled to Boone to meet him. It was, of course, love at first sight,” Brenda said.
Brenda describes Bear, who weighs eighty-five pounds, as a gentle giant who loves everyone, big and small, four legs or not. “Getting to know him has been fun,” Brenda said. “We have learned that he is a counter-cruiser who will eat your supper when left unattended. He even decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day by sneaking a bite of a cupcake – he had a pink nose from the icing!” Bear shares a home with “Lil Buddy,” a rescue beagle. “Bear loves to run with Lil Buddy and play catch-me-if-you-can,” Brenda said. Brenda and her husband also have a granddog, “Jayda,” who is a pitbull.
“Because of his gentle nature, I would love for Bear to work as a therapy dog in a hospital or senior home to help bring happiness to those who could use some cheering up,” Brenda said. In April, Bear will begin his obedience training, bringing him one step closer to therapy certification. Brenda said, “I know he will bring years of joy and laughter to our family and friends, and in return we will care and love him unconditionally.”
When asked about the pet-friendly policy at Replacements, Brenda said, “I feel blessed that Replacements allows us to bring our pets. Having them here is so relaxing and fun, and it does make your day less stressful, just knowing they’re OK. Bear enjoys all his new friends so much that he wants to stop everyone for a pat or two – it's so nice that everyone responds so nicely to him.”
Brenda added, “If you’re visiting Replacements and you see us pass by, be sure to say ‘hi’ and get a shake from Bear!”
