Chintz Patterns by Royal Winton
We’ve
recently received a great selection of hundreds of very hard-to-find English chintz
pieces by Royal Winton! Check the list at the bottom of this
page to access, by pattern, our great selection of chintz pieces! These patterns
are very collectible, and include some of the most beautiful dinnerware designs
ever produced. Royal Winton and 'chintz' dinnerware have become inexorably linked
during over a century of production of chintz patterns.
Chintz dates back to the early 17th century. Chintz designs
became popular with the import of Indian fabrics that were covered in busy floral
designs. Some chintz patterns even featured exotic birds. The Royal Winton Company
has a long history that dates back to 1885. Two brothers, Leonard Lumsden Grimwade
and Sidney Richard, opened the Grimwade Brothers Factory in Stoke-on-Trent, England.
In 1913, King George V and Queen Mary visited the Grimwade Factory. To commemorate
the event, the Grimwade brothers molded a ceramic foot warmer as a gift to the
royal couple.
The
Grimwade Brothers Factory soon changed its name to Royal Winton. In 1928, the
company released its first chintz pattern, entitled, Marguerite.
The pattern was an immediate sales success. Royal Winton continued producing chintz
patterns until the 1960’s. The high cost of production and the painstaking
work involved in decorating chintz pieces caused the company to discontinue production
of the elaborate designs. Because Royal Winton produced chintz lines for such
a short period of time, their chintz patterns have become highly collectible.
