Three of the figurines in the Lenox China Jewels Nativity collection are Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar. These names have come to represent the Three Kings, Wise Men from the East, who followed the star to Bethlehem, the place of Jesus’s birth. The names, and the number of the wise men, have come to us through traditions dating as far back as the 8th century. The Venerable Bede, a scholar and saint, was very specific in his description of the kings: "The first was called Melchior; he was an old man, with white hair and long beard; he offered gold to the Lord as to his king. The second, Gaspar by name, young, beardless, of ruddy hue, offered to Jesus his gift of incense, the homage due to Divinity. The third, of black complexion, with heavy beard, was called Baltasar; the myrrh he held in his hands prefigured the death of the Son of man." Bede’s text is one of the sources not only for the names of the kings but also for the modern practice of representing them as men of different races.

The gospel is silent on all these matters. It simply describes the kings as “magi,” or “wise men.” It’s likely they were prominent men in their own countries, perhaps scientists or scholars, but they were not necessarily of royal birth. The Bible is also silent on their number, although the three gifts presented to the baby Jesus may have set the number tradition now holds. Regardless of historical accuracy, however, the stirring carol "We Three Kings," written in 1857 by an American minister, John Henry Hopkins Jr., will continue to lift our hearts each Christmas season. And so will these beautiful China Jewels Nativity figurines from Lenox.
