Recently, one of Waterford Crystal’s finest master cutters, Tom Power, came to Replacements, Ltd. as part of a special signing event. This event was held in our 12,000-square-foot showroom on Thursday, May 4th, 2006, from 11:00am-3:00pm, ET. This unique and fun event offered our customers an opportunity to purchase Waterford classic stemware, giftware, and collectible pieces which were personally signed by Tom Power using a special engraving tool. Mr. Power engraved several Waterford Artisan cut crystal bowls with his signature and the date. Replacements, Ltd. still has several of the 9-inch engraved Waterford Artisan cut crystal bowls. We offer this very attractive piece, in very limited quantities, a great value for authentic Waterford Crystal. This wonderful piece may be used for a variety of purposes including centerpiece, fruit bowl, or serving bowl. It also makes a distinct gift that is sure to be treasured for years to come.
Mr. Power began his career with Waterford Crystal as an apprentice Wedge Cutter in September 1969. Wedge cutting is most often used for the more intricate designs cut into Waterford crystal. Deeper wedge cuts result in prisms that both scatter light and increase intense reflection. Most wedge cuts must be made in using a single uninterrupted motion of the hand. A master wedge cutter uses his intuition and sight to determine the depth and exact location of these special and eye catching cuts. Examples of Waterford wedge cuts are the basic upright cut, swerve cut, and the Waterford star cut.
After a five-year apprenticeship with regular practical examinations and the cutting of a qualifying bowl, Mr. Power was deemed a fully qualified Wedge Cutter. Five years later, Mr. Power achieved the exact status of Master Wedge Cutter. Mr. Power currently works in the Special Department in Waterford Crystal where he is responsible for the cutting of many one-of-a-kind pieces that are destined to grace the display cabinet of many of the high achievers in sports, politics and business. In order to work in this specialized area, it is necessary to have at least twenty-five years experience as a Master Craftsman. Examples of these include the Waterford Crystal Ball, which is lowered at the Times Square New Year’s celebration in New York, The Super Bowl Trophy, PGA Golf Trophies and many more. He lives in Waterford with his wife Ellen, their daughter Michelle and Grandson Evan.
