Flow Blue Plate Wall at High Point Market

This incredible wall was installed by stylists at the Jonathan Charles Showroom in High Point, North Carolina, for the Spring 2023 Furniture Market.  Dinner plates, salad plates, saucers, and platters from dozens of patterns cover the upper half of four walls to create this immersive experience. China enthusiasts may recognize the deep color of “flow blue.”

Flow blue dates back to the early 19th century, when English potteries strove to recreate the vivid designs of imported porcelain.  It gets its name from the “blurry” or slightly smeared “flow” of the cobalt transfer that occurs when lime or ammonia chloride was added to the kiln during firing. Some of Replacements’ oldest and most unusual patterns can be seen in this fascinating display.

Today flow blue china is highly collectible and is prized not only for its brilliant blue, but also for the variety of motifs and designs available.  From chintz-style all over florals to scenes from literature, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

We were so happy to collaborate with the talented team at Jonathan Charles on this gorgeous project.
